This is the most common cause of hair loss, affecting up to 70% of males during their lifetime. It is hereditary and often presents with thinning of the hair and hairline recession. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays a major role in the dermal papillae where the hair follicles are located leading to thinning of the hair and baldness.


Female Androgenic Alopecia also known as Female Pattern Baldness can affect up to 40% of women during the lifetime. Although it rarely leads to complete baldness, it can present with diffuse thinning of hair over the scalp.

Experienced, Double Board-Certified Medical Director

PAMC Medical Director Dr. Ahn is a double board-certified surgeon (American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery) who served as a full-time faculty member at Columbia University Medical Center for 20 years. Dr. Ahn received his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1987 and also did his residency training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center. He completed his fellowship training in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at New York University Medical Center before returning to Columbia University as a faculty member. He was the first surgeon in United States to perform eyelash transplants. Recently Dr. Ahn has developed a unique hair restoration technique that successfully combines the most advanced Artas robotic follicular unit extraction method and “no touch” implantation using implanters, thus significantly improving the hair graft survival rate. His current research includes stem cell tissue engineering of the hair follicle at the Craniofacial Regeneration Center at Columbia University.
